Scientists studying the Arctic have confirmed that Greenland sharks are among the longest-lived vertebrates on Earth. Researchers used radiocarbon dating of proteins in the animals’ eye lenses to estimate ages and found that the largest individual sampled was about 392 years old, with a margin of uncertainty typical of this method.
